MADE IN New York:
Showroom New York – Helping New York’s Fashion Future

(New York, NY – August 3, 2009) Motivated by its mission to support apparel manufacturing in New York City; The Garment Industry Development Corporation (GIDC) has launched Showroom New York in January of 2008.

Since its inception in 1984, GIDC has worked with local businesses, garment workers and up and coming designers through a myriad of programs.  Through our Designer Development program, designers receive sourcing and production advice as well as marketing assistance for their businesses free of charge.

GIDC assists both new designers and major apparel firms in their search for factories, marketing and distribution assistance.  Over the last twenty years, GIDC has assisted hundreds of apparel firms and designers like the Gap, Alice Roi, David Rodriguez, and the Limited, and has trained thousands of New York workers in manufacturing.

Funded by a grant from the State of New York, this program provides support and services to independent New York designers that are in the early phases of creating and running their companies.  Located in the heart of the Garment Center, Showroom New York creates a platform for up and coming designers to market their business.  The showroom offers an experienced sales team, promotional support and sourcing for designers.

Showroom New York is the first of its kind in New York, harvesting and nurturing young talent in a non profit spirit.  One of the main requirements for submission into the showroom is manufacturing in New York.  This supports GIDC’s mission of keeping local production afloat in New York. GIDC’S Board is compiled of a number of industry professionals; including; Bud Konheim, CEO of Nicole Miller, Elie Tahari, and Thomas Murry, President and COO of Calvin Klein.  An industry juried panel compiled of business savvy board members and some big name creative design talents select the members of the showroom on a yearly basis.

Showroom New York and the GIDC’s efforts are contributing to ensure the Garment District will be there for the Nicole Millers, Zac Posen and Marc Jacobs of tomorrow.  Without local apparel manufacturing New York will cease to be a World Fashion Capital.
